International Language English

We all know about the international language English. Now a days, it is being used in all ways of communication in all international level. Even in Bangladesh is has been a profession to teach English to Students. 

The Mother Language of Bangladesh is Bengali and there is no specification that English must be learnt in Bangladesh as first language. English was used as official language during Pakistani period in Bangladesh. It was used in administration, in Higher Education system as well as linkage language between Urdu and Bengali.

Now a days, English is being taught as foreign language. From 1992 in Bangladesh, English subject has been set as an compulsory subject besides regular subjects. As a result there are many English language training institutions like Saifurs, FM methods besides government institutions.

The teaching system includes Grammar Translation method, answering questions from reading comprehensions, paragraph writing, letter writing, composition writing. The present situation became like that the ability of English Communication is given 2nd Priority and the knowledge of society became 1st priority. The communicative teaching method is more effective to be more skilled in English Language.

If anyone ask why English should be an International language? Then the answers will come from the following explanations.

English language is being used as common language for international communication. It is being used as means of sharing views and voicing of the people all over the world. In our country like Bangladesh, unemployment problem is a big issue. The unemployed youths have lacking in communicating English Language. If they were skilled in English Language they would have been appointed in job sector. The modern age is the subject of science and technology. Most of the scientific theory and technological books are written in English. Now if any any student who has interest in science and technology will not be able to gather knowledge due to having problems in English language.

To be more efficient in Communication English Language, we should spread out the system of practicing speaking English with our surrounding people. Lack of appropriate training of the teachers is one of the reason to be not skilled in English. To address those issues both short term and long term steps should be taken.

Beside compulsory education system short term English Language Training program should be introduced by government Colleges and educational institutions. Crash program should be introduced though the whole country. To be successful in these steps both local and private initiatives are essential.

The permanent steps should be like this. The Teachers of English subject should attend all types of Communication English Language Training Program. A National English Language Center should be set up.

From the above discussion it is clear that the method of English Language learning and teaching in Bangladesh are not satisfactory. To change this situation both Government and private sectors should come forward.
